Spaced Repetition Systems + Leitner

You cannot cover a musical concept once with your children and expect them to remember it. You have to repeat things until they are mastered and automatic. However, there is a science to the timing of your lesson repetitions. Ideally the intervals between repeated rehearsals of a key concept should increase gradually over time and this is the basis of the Leitner system. I favor a traffic light system. Until all of the kids are guessing all of the prompts correctly then a given aulinha has a "red" status, which means that it should be practiced every lesson. Once they all get the lesson right, the aulinha has an "orange" status and will be practiced every other lesson. If they get the lesson correct again then the lesson will "go green" and only appear every 4 lessons (after that I put the aulinha on the shelf). However if they get the lesson wrong it "goes red" again and has to be practiced every day. Blah!
